Financial advisor Stefan Borson has accused Chelsea of deliberately ignoring the Premier League’s profit and sustainability guidelines in their recent spending spree.
Borson believes that Chelsea’s owner, Todd Boehly, is knowingly flaunting the guidelines after overpaying for the club last year.
Chelsea have spent over £800m on new talent since Boehly’s consortium purchased the club in 2022, more than any club in LaLiga and narrowly behind the 18 clubs in Germany’s top-flight.
Borson suggests that Chelsea’s strategy is to ignore the financial rules in order to accelerate the club’s success.
He also points out that historically, Chelsea has operated at a loss and filled the gap by selling players.
However, Borson believes that Boehly’s overpayment for the club has led him to want to accelerate its success.
The Premier League is reportedly considering closing the loophole that allows clubs to spread the cost of purchases over the length of a player’s contract.
