Jesse Lingard has opened up about his struggles at Manchester United in the final stages of his time there, revealing he resorted to alcohol in order to “take the pain away”.
The England international admitted he felt overwhelmed with the pressure from fans and personal issues.
He said that he was trying to “forget what was going on” but instead it made things 10 times worse.
Lingard, who made 232 appearances for United, also divulged that his mother Kirsty had suffered from depression when he was younger, saying she would spend entire days in bed and was even hospitalized for treatment in 2019; this left him in charge of caring for his two younger siblings.
