The Independent National Electoral Commission has confirmed Bright Ngene of the Labour Party as the winner of the Enugu South 1 State Constituency rerun held on August 16 – www.naijnaira.com reports.
Ngene, a lawyer serving a prison term in Enugu Correctional Centre, was sentenced in 2017 over a ₦15 million community fund dispute.
Despite his incarceration, his party nominated him as their flag bearer for the rerun, making the outcome one of the most talked-about results of 2025.
INEC’s National Commissioner, Samuel Olumeku, announced the official result, stressing that the process followed all legal requirements.
He explained, “Two re-run elections were ordered in Enugu and Kano after previous disruptions, but both have now been successfully concluded.”
For Enugu South 1, Olumeku declared, “Ngene Bright Emeka of the Labour Party was returned as the duly elected candidate.”
INEC’s spokesman in Enugu, Rex Achumie, later confirmed the declaration, noting that the Returning Officer had made the formal announcement.
The rerun, previously marred by violence and thuggery, finally produced a decisive outcome with the electorate handing victory to a candidate behind bars.
