The Lagos State Government has successfully registered 130,000 households for the Federal Government’s ₦75,000 conditional cash transfer initiative aimed at easing the impact of economic reforms.
According to Punch, the initiative began on April 9, 2025, and spans all 57 Local Government and Local Council Development Areas in Lagos.
Speaking at a press conference in Alausa, Ikeja, Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Ope George, stated that the enrolled households had their National Identification Numbers (NINs) updated and linked to the Lagos State Single Social Register—a subset of the National Social Register.
“The Federal Government has mandated that all beneficiaries on the National Register must have updated records, including their NINs and geo-locations,” George said.
This NIN cash transfer update is part of the requirements laid out by the Presidential Panel overseeing the rollout of the conditional cash transfer in Nigeria. The aim is to prevent duplication, eliminate fraud, and enable seamless disbursement of the ₦75,000 grants.
Ikorodu, Alimosho, Mushin Lead in Enrollment
George reported that enrollment efforts have been particularly successful in certain areas. Ikorodu tops the list with 16,418 households, followed by Alimosho with 14,964 and Mushin with 10,712.
Teams from the Lagos State Operation Coordinating Unit and local Community-Based Targeting Teams worked across districts to meet the data integration deadlines.
A Response to Economic Reforms
The conditional cash transfer is part of wider relief efforts following tough fiscal decisions such as the removal of fuel subsidies and exchange rate unification. These measures have affected household incomes across the country, leading to increased demand for social assistance.
