A recent list has revealed the top 10 players with the best percentage of man of the match awards per game over the last 15 years, and Lionel Messi is comfortably in the lead.
According to statistics expert @ThePopFoot, Messi won an impressive 324 man of the match awards in 628 games for Barcelona and PSG, giving him a percentage per game of 51.6%.
This means that Messi was voted the best player on the pitch in over 50% of the matches he played during this period.
Cristiano Ronaldo, a five-time Ballon d’Or winner, takes second place on the list with 176 man of the match awards in 612 matches for Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Juventus, giving him a percentage per game of 28.8%.
While Ronaldo may dispute Messi’s claim to being the greatest player ever, these numbers further highlight Messi’s incredible talent and impact on the game.
The list also features other notable players such as Neymar, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and Kylian Mbappe.
However, the only English player to make the cut is Harry Kane, the current captain of the England national team.
Kane has won 98 man of the match awards in 463 appearances for Tottenham and Bayern Munich, giving him a percentage per game of 21.2%.
Messi’s move to the US to play for David Beckham’s Inter Miami means he won’t be able to add to his tally.
