If you’re preparing to sit for any of the ICAN exams, one of the first things you’ll need to sort out is where you’ll be writing the test. There are designated ICAN exam centres scattered all over Nigeria, and knowing where they’re located can save you a lot of unnecessary stress. Whether you’re based in the north, south, east, or west, there’s likely a centre not too far from you.
Let’s now take a look at ICAN exam centres in Lagos and indeed Nigeria.
What ICAN Is and Why It Exists
ICAN, short for the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, was officially established in 1965 through an Act of Parliament. The aim back then—and still today—is to regulate the accounting profession in Nigeria and uphold high standards for those joining the field.
They don’t just hand out certificates. ICAN manages a structured membership system that includes associates, fellows, and chartered accountants. Members are expected to maintain high ethical and technical standards, and there’s a regulatory system in place to keep everyone in line.
ICAN’s Professional Role and Global Reach
Over the years, ICAN has expanded into a massive network of professionals with more than 38,000 chartered accountants certified. These members are active across multiple industries, both locally and internationally.
ICAN also plays a big role in Africa’s accounting ecosystem. The organisation sets exam standards that are among the most rigorous on the continent. On top of that, they offer additional certifications in specialist accounting fields through seven dedicated faculties.
They’re also a founding member of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC), the global body that oversees the accounting profession. That puts ICAN in the international spotlight when it comes to developing competent and ethical accountants.
Types of ICAN Exams in Nigeria
There are two main exams conducted by ICAN, and the one you choose depends on your qualifications.
The first type is the professional exam, which targets individuals who have a bachelor’s degree, an HND in any field, or the AAT (Accounting Technicians Scheme) certificate from ICAN.
The second exam path is the Accounting Technician Scheme (ATS), which is designed for those with at least five O’Level credits in no more than two sittings. English and Maths are mandatory for eligibility here.
How to Register for the ICAN Exam
Registration starts with payment. Walk into any commercial bank and make a payment of ₦7,000 using the Pay Direct option, or pay online via the ICAN website. Just be aware that bank charges may apply.
Once you’ve made the payment, head to the website listed on your receipt to complete the registration. You’ll need a coloured passport photo of yourself for the form.
Attach your passport, print the filled form, and sign it. You also need a sponsor—someone already chartered. Their full name, ICAN membership number, and phone number should be included in your application.
You’ll then need to take your form to your sponsor for certification. If you’re applying with an AAT qualification, you’ll also pay ₦23,500 for your conference and induction, and submit proof of that with your application.
Include two certified passport photos, your original Pay Direct receipt, and a PIN voucher with your documents.
