Liverpool defender Sepp van den Berg has requested a transfer from the club, alleging that his career has been hindered.

In a candid interview, the 21-year-old, who has spent five years at Liverpool, expressed frustration over his limited senior appearances, despite loan spells at Preston North End, Schalke, and Mainz.

Van den Berg impressed during his time at Mainz, prompting him to seek opportunities elsewhere.

Liverpool has purportedly set a £20 million valuation on the player, which exceeds Mainz’s financial capabilities.

“I was aware that I couldn’t go directly from PEC Zwolle to Liverpool’s first team,” he clarified in an interview with De Telegraaf.

“I could have stayed at Liverpool for another one or two years, but my desire to play was overwhelming. I insisted on being loaned out repeatedly because I felt I was improving steadily, both technically and physically.

“The first season was a mixed experience. On one hand, it was incredible to train alongside the first team, facing the likes of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, and Mo Salah. It was tough, but I relished the challenge. However, I began to feel neglected. I felt ready in 2021.”

“I had a positive discussion with the management, receiving encouraging feedback. While I understood I wouldn’t displace players like Van Dijk, Matip, or Konate, I believed I could be a valuable backup. When I realized I wasn’t getting the opportunities I hoped for, I made it clear that I wanted to leave.”

“Throughout my time at Liverpool, I felt a lack of confidence from the club, yet they were impeding my future. I crave regular playing time to continue developing. In Germany, I relish the challenge of facing top teams like Dortmund, Bayern Munich, Stuttgart, Leipzig, and Leverkusen every week.”
