Following Manchester United’s 7-0 loss to Liverpool, FIFA are now looking into a ‘mercy rule’ that would help teams being humiliated by their opponents.

Referee Chief Pierluigi Collina questioned Andy Madley’s decision to only add three minutes of injury time during the rout at Anfield and stated that referees used “common sense” in this situation.

Collina is now pushing for FIFA’s lengthier stoppage time as seen during the World Cup, as well as a ‘mercy rule’ that stipulates when goal difference between two teams becomes large enough, no additional stoppage time should be given.

The Premier League has yet to adopt this rule or longer stoppage times, but with FIFA President Gianni Infantino monitoring leagues closely to ensure they use FIFA’s methods, we might expect Premier League games to become even longer next season.
