Manchester United is currently facing pressure to suspend Brazilian footballer Antony following allegations made by his ex-girlfriend, Gabriela Cavallin, accusing him of attacking her in a hotel room in Manchester.
Antony, 23, has denied the allegations, and the club has stated that they are taking the matter seriously.
Domestic abuse charities have called on Manchester United to take action against Antony, who is currently under investigation by Greater Manchester Police.
The club, however, has not yet suspended him from selection and is waiting to see if charges are filed by the police.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Manchester United acknowledged the allegations and mentioned that the police are conducting inquiries.
The club also expressed its concern about the impact these allegations and subsequent reporting may have on survivors of abuse.
Antony has already been removed from the Brazil national team for the upcoming international break against Bolivia and Peru.
In her interview with Brazilian outlet UOL, Cavallin claimed that the alleged attack resulted in a cut to her head and damage to a breast implant.
She also accused Antony of threatening her while she was pregnant and claimed that he had attacked her multiple times between June 2022 and May 2023.
Mason Greenwood’s previous suspension by the club in January 2022 following his arrest on charges of attempted rape and controlling and coercive behaviour was also mentioned.
The charges against Greenwood were dropped, and he remained suspended for 18 months while the club conducted an internal investigation.
Women’s Aid, a domestic abuse charity, has urged Manchester United to take a firmer stand on the allegations against Antony.
They believe that not doing so may send a message that the club is not taking the claims seriously.
