May Day FG promises pay rise for lecturers, doctors, others

During the International Workers’ Day celebration at the Eagle Square in Abuja, Nigeria’s Minister of Labour, Employment and Productivity, Chris Ngige, announced that lecturers, doctors, and other civil servants under the Consolidated University Academic Salary Structure, Consolidated Medical Salary Scale (CONMESS), Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS), and Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure (CONTISS) will receive a pay rise.

The exact percentage of the increase was not disclosed, but workers will also receive arrears from January 2023.

Previously, only federal civil servants under the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure benefited from a 40% pay rise introduced by the government.

Ngige stated that the National Salaries, Wages and Income Commission is finalizing the increase, which demonstrates the government’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare and conditions of service.

The increase will take effect from January 1, 2023, and provisions were made for it in the 2023 Appropriations.
