The Abuja-Kaduna railway line that suffered a derailment last week will be fully repaired within the next ten days, according to the Minister of Transportation, Sa’idu Ahmed Alkali – www.naijnaira.com reports.
Daily Trust revealed that the incident occurred at Asham station on a Kaduna-bound trip, leaving parts of the track and several coaches damaged.
On board the train were 618 people, including 583 passengers, 15 crew members from the Nigerian Railway Corporation, eight cleaners, 11 catering staff, and a medical officer.
Seven passengers were injured during the derailment, though no fatalities were recorded.
While speaking after inspecting the accident site, Alkali praised the swift response of security agents and emergency teams who worked to safeguard lives and secure the rail corridor.
He explained that railway engineers have been on the ground working nonstop to clear the wreckage and begin full track restoration.
“At the time the derailment happened, the locomotive was pulling eight coaches. Four have already been removed, and we are bringing in a larger crane to move the remaining ones,” the minister said.
Alkali assured that barring weather disruptions, full rail services on the Abuja-Kaduna route will return within ten days.
