The National Assembly is drafting a bill to mandate that future presidents-elect take their oath of office at the assembly’s arcade. According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele announced the proposal on Tuesday during a June 12 anniversary event in Abuja.
Bamidele stated the bill aims to reinforce Nigeria’s democratic traditions. A related legislative proposal would require the president to deliver the annual State of the Nation Address before a joint parliamentary session every June 12. President Bola Tinubu has been invited to speak at this year’s Democracy Day observance.
“It is our desire to institutionalise the State of the Nation Address,” Bamidele said. “We will bring a bill to ensure Nigerians can anticipate it yearly. June 12, given its historical weight, is the ideal date for this address.”
The Senate Leader added that relocating the presidential inauguration to the National Assembly arcade would redefine Nigeria’s political ceremonies. Democracy Day commemorates the annulled 1993 election won by MKO Abiola, a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s democratic history.
