This weekend, Glo-sponsored African Voices Changemakers on CNN International will showcase two of Nigeria’s top gospel artists: Nathaniel Bassey and Mercy Chinwo. The 30-minute segment, hosted by Larry Madowo, will highlight their inspiring journeys. It will air on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. on DSTV Channel 401.
Mercy Chinwo is known for her powerful vocals, stage presence, and charm. Her distinctive style has garnered a loyal following both on stage and online.
Nathaniel Bassey has gained massive attention, especially with The Hallelujah Challenge, drawing large crowds in person and virtually. His songs, such as “Yahweh Sabaoth,” “Ebenezer,” and “Olowogbogboro,” resonate with listeners across genres.
Bassey was born in Akwa Ibom State on August 27, 1981. Besides being a gifted singer, he is a trumpet player and gospel songwriter. He initially studied Politics and International Affairs at the University of Lagos before moving to the UK to pursue music.
Known for his humility, Bassey has become one of Nigeria’s most influential gospel music preachers. He pastors the King’s Court branch of The Redeemed Christian Church of God in Lagos, where his music continues to inspire.
Mercy Chinwo, born on September 5, 1991, began her church music career at six. Her breakthrough came in 2017 when she signed with EeZee Conceptz and released her debut single, “Excess Love,” in 2018.
Chinwo’s voice and spirit have earned her many accolades, including the AFRIMMA Award for Gospel Artist of the Year in 2020 and the Africa Gospel Music of the Year at the 2022 CLIMA Africa Awards.
The African Voices Changemakers segment will air multiple times: Saturday at noon, Sunday at 4:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., and Monday at 4 a.m. The same broadcast will continue next week.
