NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has warned that Russia could have the capacity to attack NATO within the next five years. According to Bulgaria News, Rutte delivered this warning in a London speech, urging NATO allies to urgently commit to stronger defense efforts.
Rutte emphasized that NATO members are likely to approve a substantial rise in military spending, potentially reaching 5% of GDP. He stressed that this figure is based on current security assessments and not randomly selected. “The alliance must take a quantum leap in strengthening its collective defense capabilities,” Rutte stated.
As part of this expansion, NATO is expected to multiply its air defense systems fivefold, significantly boost the number of tanks, and manufacture millions of additional artillery shells. Rutte explained that these steps are vital to fully carry out NATO’s defense strategies, not just in relation to the Ukraine conflict, but to prepare for ongoing European security threats.
Russia quickly responded. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov accused NATO of fueling conflict, describing the alliance as a force for “aggression and confrontation” that increases tension rather than promoting peace.
