Netflix has significantly expanded its live sports portfolio by securing exclusive U.S. broadcasting rights for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2027 and 2031.
This landmark deal marks the streaming giant’s first venture into live international sports and grants access to every live match and studio shows for both English and Spanish-language broadcasts in the U.S.
The 2027 World Cup will take place in Brazil, with top-ranked teams like the USA, Spain, and Germany competing.
The host country for the 2031 tournament has yet to be announced.
FIFA president, Gianni Infantino praised Netflix for its strong commitment to growing women’s football, noting that partnering with the world’s largest streaming service highlights the true value of the FIFA Women’s World Cup and the global women’s game.
The 2023 Women’s World Cup attracted over 5 million viewers on average on Fox Sports, demonstrating a large audience for women’s soccer.
In addition to live broadcasts, Netflix will produce an exclusive documentary series focusing on the top players, their personal journeys, and the global growth of women’s soccer leading up to both tournaments.
Netflix’s chief content officer, Bela Bajaria emphasized that the partnership goes beyond streaming matches, aiming to celebrate the players and the culture driving the rise of women’s sports.
Netflix has previously produced several sports-related docuseries, including “Under Pressure: The U.S. Women’s World Cup Team” and “Captains of the World” in collaboration with FIFA.
