A promising blood test trial aimed at spotting cancer in its earliest stages has now enrolled over 450 people across Dorset — www.naijnaira.com reports.

The MODERNISED study, according to Southampton Clinical Trials Unit, is focused on identifying ten different cancers by analyzing how the body’s immune system responds to them.

Unlike other studies, this one does not track DNA shed by cancer cells, but instead looks at blood proteins that may indicate immune reactions tied to early cancer growth.

Hospitals involved include University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust and Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, among three others across the UK.

One participant, Ian Robinson, 72, who was diagnosed with colorectal cancer, shared, “There were no symptoms, no pain, nothing,” underscoring the benefit of early detection.

He explained his motivation simply: “I’m delighted to participate and hopefully help improve the way things are done.”

Dr. Victoria Goss, who heads early diagnosis research, stressed that early detection improves treatment success by allowing doctors to act before cancer spreads.

The study is being led by Professor Andy Davies, who said the focus is on blood-based protein levels rather than the more common DNA methods used in other trials.

Researchers will examine samples from 1,000 recently diagnosed cancer patients and 350 individuals who either have similar symptoms or are healthy controls.
