The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has put forward a list of seven new demands for the Bola Tinubu-led federal government ahead of this year’s Workers’ Day celebration on May 1st. These demands come in addition to the NLC’s request for an increase in the minimum wage for Nigerian workers.

Hakeem Ambali, the National Treasurer of the NLC, highlighted some of the key demands. Firstly, the congress is calling for the creation of state and local government police forces to address the issue of insecurity in the country.

They also emphasized the need for improved labor-government industrial relations and the full implementation of the minimum wage across all sectors, including the federal, state, local government, and private sectors.

Furthermore, the NLC is advocating for the settlement of pension arrears and the establishment of compressed natural gas conversion centers in all senatorial districts. They are also urging the government to prioritize the repair of the Port Harcourt and Kaduna refineries.

Additionally, the congress is demanding the granting of local government autonomy and the provision of an infrastructure support scheme to all local governments.

The NLC has stressed that both state and local governments, as well as the organized private sector, should be prepared to comply with the new minimum wage once it is approved. The NLC had previously proposed a minimum wage of N615,000 per month.

Ambali mentioned that the NLC is eagerly awaiting an invitation to the next meeting of the tripartite committee on minimum wage.

This meeting will play a crucial role in determining the outcome of the NLC’s demands.

As the Workers’ Day celebration approaches, it remains to be seen how the government will respond to these demands and address the concerns raised by the NLC.
