The UK government’s new policy on foreign student visas is not aimed at discouraging Nigerian students from studying in the UK, according to British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery.
Instead, the policy is intended to manage the pressure on social services for scholars.
Montgomery urged Nigerians to see the new visa regime in a bigger context, stating that Nigerians desiring to study in the UK now have a 97% visa approval rate.
He also highlighted the strong people-to-people links between the UK and Nigeria, with more than 10% of the visas from the UK going to Nigerian citizens.
The policy change is aimed at managing the demands on services in university towns and elsewhere, as there has been a significant rise in the number of people coming from all around the world, not just from Nigeria.
Montgomery expressed the UK’s pride in its research institutes and higher education, which are listed among the top hundred universities in the world, and believes that Nigerians stand to gain massively from the international exposure and networks offered by studying in the UK.
