In a controversial decision, the Senate has denied the motion to release Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
The motion, which was brought forward by Senator Osita Izunaso and co-sponsored by other lawmakers from the South East, aimed to address the ongoing sit-at-home order enforced by unknown gunmen in the region.
The senators acknowledged the loss of innocent lives and destruction of properties resulting from these actions, leading to a decline in economic activities and financial losses for businesses and workers.
The disruptions also have long-term effects on education, public services, and the overall well-being and safety of the population in the South-East.
Despite the suspension of the sit-at-home order by the IPOB faction led by Kanu, a faction led by Simon Ekpa continues to enforce the order, resulting in further violence and attacks on residents in the region.
