The Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved the establishment of 37 new private universities, and the National University Commission (NUC) has now granted them provisional licenses.

This brings the total number of private universities in Nigeria to 147 out of a total of 264 universities in the country.

At the presentation of the licenses, the Executive Secretary of NUC, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, emphasized that the motive for creating these universities should not be for financial gain, but for a higher and noble goal.

He also highlighted the need for more tertiary education opportunities in Nigeria, as the current enrollment of 2.23 million is only about 12% of the total population of 220 million.

The NUC boss charged the proprietors of the new universities to prioritize quality assurance and assured them of the Commission’s support and cooperation in growing the university system.
