A senior official of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Samsideen Oladiti, has been arrested in Lagos for murder and a separate assault case — www.naijnaira.com reports.
The Guardian Nigeria confirmed that Oladiti, popularly called “Shamelon,” was picked up by police following two separate attacks on Lagos Island.
Police said one of the cases involved a dispatch rider assaulted on September 17, who was beaten with a helmet and fists until he collapsed and had to be placed on oxygen.
According to Babaseyi Oluseyi, deputy police spokesperson, “The victim is still receiving treatment in hospital after suffering serious bodily harm.”
Investigators also linked Oladiti to an earlier attack on August 28, where a man was struck multiple times with a metallic ring and later died from head injuries.
News of his arrest triggered a violent protest at his Sandgrouse Market office, where angry sympathizers set two of his motorcycles on fire before police restored calm.
Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh personally led officers to the scene to disperse crowds and prevent further damage.
Oladiti has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department at Panti-Yaba for interrogation and case review.
NURTW state chairman Mustapha Adekunle, known as Sego, disowned Oladiti’s actions, stressing, “The union does not condone violence or any unlawful activity.”
Adekunle also promised internal disciplinary measures if Oladiti is found guilty, saying loyalty or closeness will not protect anyone from consequences.
Police appealed to residents to remain calm and assured that justice will be fully pursued in all cases connected to the suspect.
