Nyesom Wike, the Rivers State governor, has taken legal action to challenge the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) move to suspend his membership.
The case was filed in a federal high court in Abuja and asks the court to order the defendants to stay all actions relating to the suspension or expulsion of Governor Wike.
The defendants named in the suit include PDP, its national working committee and executive committee, party chairman Iyorchia Ayu and its national secretary Samuel Anyawu along with INEC.
In the motion filed on February 2 before judge J.K Omotosho, Governor Wike is asking the court for restraining orders to stop any imminent suspension of himself by PDP.
After hearing the motion, Judge Omotosho directed that all parties involved must maintain peace and “not take any action or step or act that may make the outcome of the motion ‘nugatory’.
He further ordered that any action made by defendants against this ruling shall be declared null and void adding that notice should be served through substituted means as well as pasting it upon PDD headquarters in Abuja.
The next hearing has been scheduled for February 14th.
This comes weeks after PDP had suspended Senator Chimaroke Nnamani followed by a warning issued by them that members ‘not supporting’ their presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar would suffer consequences as well.
However, allies of Nyesom Wike have refused to declare their support for Abubakar as they continue demanding the resignation of Iyorchia Ayu as chairperson of the PDP.
