Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has urged the incoming Governor of Abia state, Alex Otti, to prioritize clean and transparent governance that will serve as an example to other states.

Speaking virtually at the inauguration of the 2023 Abia Transition Council in Aba, Okonjo-Iweala stated that Nigerians, especially those from the South-East, have lost faith in governance.

She added that the incoming government must adopt disruptive strategies, rather than traditional operational systems, to regain the people’s trust.

The former Minister of Finance advised Otti to think of ways to modernize Abia and bring it in line with the rest of the world.

She emphasized that everything the new government would achieve would depend on its governance, urging Abia citizens abroad to return and contribute to the state’s development.

While acknowledging that Abia citizens are entrepreneurial and provide for themselves, Okonjo-Iweala noted that this was not a sustainable way to run the state.

She expressed the hope that through Otti’s leadership, Abia could be set on the right path of development and modernization through disruptive digital technology.

It is expected that Otti, a former bank CEO and financial expert, will bring his experience to bear in managing the state’s finances and reviving its economy.

The 100-member 2023 Abia Transition Council, inaugurated on Tuesday, is expected to facilitate the smooth transition of power from the outgoing administration to the incoming government.
