Asisat Oshoala has not announced her retirement from the Super Falcons, despite reports suggesting otherwise ahead of Nigeria’s semifinal clash with South Africa at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, NaijNaira can report.
The rumour gained traction after screenshots claiming to be from Oshoala’s Facebook page circulated online, quoting a farewell message. The post stated she planned to end her international career after the tournament in Morocco.
However, checks on her verified social media profiles, including Facebook, Instagram, and X, revealed no such post. Neither Oshoala nor the Nigeria Football Federation has confirmed the claim. Head coach Justin Madugu has also remained silent.
Oshoala joined Bay FC earlier this year after a dominant run at Barcelona Femeni. Her goal in the opener against Tunisia remains her only strike so far in the competition. She was benched during Nigeria’s 5–0 quarterfinal win over Zambia, though her experience continues to be vital behind the scenes.
South Africa, unbeaten in regulation since 2018, will be a tough opponent. But Nigeria, led by Oshoala, remains confident. Until an official statement is released, retirement reports should be treated as speculation.
