France has issued a strong condemnation over threats directed at Rafael Grossi, head of the UN’s nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, NaijNaira can report.
In a statement published by the French Foreign Ministry and cited by Anadolu Agency, Paris expressed full backing for the IAEA and emphasized the importance of its director operating without pressure or interference.
“France firmly condemns threats against Rafael Grossi and fully supports the IAEA’s independent and impartial mission,” the ministry stated.
The French government also raised alarm over any actions that could undermine Iran’s cooperation with the nuclear agency.
“France expresses its great concern over any undermining of Iran’s cooperation with the IAEA,” the statement read.
Paris urged Iran to meet all its international nuclear obligations without delay or conditions, particularly under the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement.
It reminded Tehran that the safety of IAEA personnel is non-negotiable and a direct responsibility of the Iranian government.
“France recalls the responsibility of the Iranian government to ensure the safety and security of the Agency’s staff in Iran,” the ministry added.
The latest tension comes in the wake of US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites and Tehran’s reaction by blocking Grossi from entering the country.
Iran’s parliament also moved to cut off cooperation with the IAEA, escalating nuclear-related concerns in the region.
France reiterated its call for a lasting, transparent, and verifiable diplomatic solution to address Iran’s nuclear program and avoid further instability.
