Patrick Vieira has been appointed as the new head coach of Serie A club Genoa following the dismissal of Alberto Gilardino.
Vieira had been out of management since leaving Ligue 1 side Strasbourg in the summer.
Genoa’s poor start to the 2024-25 season, with only two wins in 12 league games, led to Gilardino’s departure.
Gilardino had guided Genoa to promotion from Serie B to Serie A in 2023 and helped secure an 11th-place finish last season, but the team’s struggles this term prompted the change.
Vieira brings significant managerial experience, having previously managed New York City FC, Nice, Crystal Palace, and Manchester City’s development squad.
At Strasbourg, he led the team to a 12th-place finish in Ligue 1 last season but left by mutual consent in the summer due to disagreements over player recruitment and staffing.
His tenure at Crystal Palace ended in March 2023 after a poor run of results, despite a solid first season where he led the team to 12th in the Premier League with an attacking style of play.
Vieira’s first match in charge of Genoa will be against Cagliari on Sunday.
With the club struggling in Serie A, his immediate challenge will be to turn around their fortunes and guide them up the league table.
