Imo State’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced Senator Samuel Anyanwu as its candidate for the gubernatorial election, which is slated for November 11, 2023.
The announcement came after a keenly contested primary, which was held at the party’s state secretariat located along the Okigwe Road in Owerri, the capital of Imo State.
The PDP’s decision to choose Senator Anyanwu as its flagbearer has set the stage for a fierce electoral battle with the incumbent Governor Hope Uzodimma of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Anyanwu, a former Senator who represented Imo East in the National Assembly, is expected to bring his vast experience and wealth of knowledge to bear on the election.
His emergence as the candidate of the PDP is seen by many as a significant boost for the party’s chances of winning the election.
Speaking after his victory, Senator Anyanwu expressed gratitude to the PDP leadership and members for their confidence in him.
He promised to run a people-centered campaign that would address the various challenges facing Imo State.
According to him, “I want to thank the PDP leadership and members for giving me the opportunity to represent the party in the upcoming governorship election in Imo State. I pledge to run a transparent and inclusive campaign that will focus on the needs and aspirations of the people of Imo State.”
He also appealed to his fellow contestants to join hands with him to ensure the success of the PDP in the election, saying, “I call on my fellow contestants to put aside their differences and join hands with me to ensure the victory of the PDP in the forthcoming election. Together, we can bring the much-needed change that Imo State deserves.”
The Imo State PDP Chairman, Charles Ugwu, also congratulated Senator Anyanwu on his victory, describing him as a seasoned politician with a deep understanding of the political terrain in Imo State.
In his words, “I want to congratulate Senator Samuel Anyanwu on his emergence as the governorship candidate of our great party, the PDP, in Imo State. Senator Anyanwu is a seasoned politician who has contributed immensely to the growth and development of Imo State. I am confident that he will run a successful campaign that will resonate with the people of Imo State.”
