A coalition of opposition leaders has accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum of undermining democratic institutions in Nigeria. According to a statement by coalition leader Salihu Moh Lukman, the actions of the PDP governors could potentially destroy these institutions if unchecked.
Lukman further criticized the PDP for mismanaging its internal affairs, stating that the party is headed towards self-destruction. He pointed out that the PDP has not held a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in two years, leaving many uncertain about who leads the party.
“The mere fact that the NEC meeting of the party has not held for two years, and no Nigerian can confidently tell who is really in charge of the party is evidence of this collapse,” Lukman said. This lack of leadership, he argued, has been ignored by the party’s governors.
Additionally, Lukman accused the governors of undermining the authority of party organs. He warned that if this trend continues, it could severely damage the country’s democratic institutions.
Despite being out of power for over a decade, Lukman believes the PDP has failed to provide a strong opposition. He noted that Nigerians are becoming increasingly disillusioned with the party’s current direction.
Finally, Lukman stated that the governors are aware the party’s problems are too deep to fix easily. He expressed confidence that Nigerians will not accept the current state of the PDP as a viable alternative.
