The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has responded to recent high-profile defections with a strong message ahead of the 2027 general elections. Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum said the outcome of the elections would depend on the will of Nigerians, not the number of governors a party holds.
According to THEWILL, Damagum made these remarks during a ceremony in Abuja where Ambassador Jude Ezenwafor received his certificate of return as the PDP’s governorship candidate for the upcoming Anambra election. He described the defection of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former Vice Presidential candidate Ifeanyi Okowa to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as “very sad and unfortunate.”
Damagum criticized what he called the ruling party’s use of pressure and incentives to sway PDP members, pointing to the growing hardship faced by citizens. He emphasized that the real contest is not about political titles or party control but about who can truly deliver for the people.
“This election is not APC versus any governor or senator—it is APC versus Nigerians,” Damagum stated. He urged the public to hold onto hope and to remain engaged, suggesting that the voters’ voice will matter more than party affiliations.
He also expressed confidence in the PDP’s prospects in Anambra, commending Ezenwafor for his persistence and assuring full support from the party. Damagum pledged to unify the ranks and ensure collective backing ahead of the November 8 poll.
Meanwhile, aides to President Bola Tinubu took a jab at former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, suggesting his influence is waning. They claimed the defection of key allies has left his efforts to build a coalition weakened and fragmented.
