Three senators from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held a closed-door meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Friday. According to a report by Premium Times, the lawmakers were accompanied by the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje.
The senators—Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central), Yahaya Abdullahi (Kebbi North), and Garba Maidoki (Kebbi South)—were also joined by APC members Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State, Governor Ahmad Aliyu of Sokoto, and Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu.
While the reason for the meeting has not been officially disclosed, speculation continues to grow that the senators are considering leaving the PDP for the APC. Their visit follows a series of defections in recent weeks, with several lawmakers at both state and federal levels switching allegiance to the ruling party.
Among those who recently left their parties is Kano South Senator Kawu Sumaila, who departed the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) on Wednesday. Similarly, six PDP members of the House of Representatives from Delta State announced their defection earlier in the week, alongside Osun State’s Oluwole Oke, who left the PDP in April.
At the state level, the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, as well as all members of the Delta State House of Assembly, have joined the APC.
The three Kebbi senators who met with Tinubu are notable figures within the PDP. Adamu Aliero, a former governor and FCT minister, has served multiple terms in the Senate. Yahaya Abdullahi was once the Senate Minority Leader, while Garba Maidoki, elected in 2023, has drawn attention for his outspoken views.
Speaking on the reason some lawmakers are moving to the APC, one federal legislator who requested anonymity noted, “Many are aligning with the ruling party to secure better access to resources for their constituents.”
