Everyone has different bathroom habits, and the frequency of urination varies from person to person. But how often should you really be heading to the loo based on your age?

According to a 2025 article by Jessica Lindsay on Metro, age plays a major role in determining how often you need to pee throughout the day. External factors like your diet, gender, and health conditions can also affect the frequency, but understanding what’s typical for each life stage is key.

For children, it’s common to urinate between 6 to 14 times a day. Younger children generally urinate 8-14 times, which gradually decreases to 6-12 times for older children. If a child needs to use the bathroom more than this, it could signal an underlying issue such as anxiety, caffeine intake, constipation, or a small bladder capacity. Other factors like structural abnormalities in the bladder or urethra could also play a part.

As teens enter puberty, their bodies undergo significant hormonal changes, which can lead to increased urination frequency. On average, teenagers urinate 4 to 6 times daily, but it’s not uncommon for this to fluctuate. While occasional increased urination is normal, persistent frequency may point to a urinary tract infection (UTI), diabetes, excessive caffeine consumption, or, in rare cases, bladder cancer.

Adults under the age of 60 typically urinate 5 to 8 times a day, with an additional trip at night being common. According to Hamid Abboudi, a consultant urologist at New Victoria Hospital, “women tend to urinate more frequently than men.” Factors such as pregnancy, UTIs, or hormonal changes can influence frequency in women. Men, on the other hand, may experience less frequent urination, but other factors, like certain medications and medical conditions, could lead to an uptick in bathroom visits.

For adults over 60, frequent urination becomes even more common. It’s normal for older adults to urinate up to 10 times a day. This increase can be attributed to weakened bladder muscles, reduced kidney function, and conditions like nocturia, where nighttime urination becomes more frequent. Additionally, some medications, like diuretics, may lead to increased trips to the bathroom during the day and night.

Aging also affects the prostate gland in men, which can increase pressure on the bladder and cause more frequent urination.
