Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has criticized the current leadership in Nigeria, claiming that individuals with criminal records and unverified or forged certificates are in control of the country.
Speaking on Arise Television, Obi argued that Nigeria cannot be called a democracy, especially when the judicial system lacks independence and there is no true freedom of speech.
He pointed out that people, including those in high positions, face harassment daily due to the lack of democratic principles in the country.
Obi emphasized that for a democracy to function, there must be a strong legislative body and an independent judiciary. He stated that Nigeria lacks both, which undermines its democratic status.
According to Obi, in a true democracy, there are clear qualifications for those running for office, including verified educational credentials and a clean criminal record. He criticized the current situation where people with forged certificates and criminal backgrounds hold power.
He concluded by calling out the situation in Rivers, asking if it could be considered democratic, reinforcing his belief that Nigeria has yet to achieve genuine democracy.
