This year’s WASSCE results are out, and the numbers in English and Mathematics are nothing short of alarming – www.naijnaira.com reports.

WAEC released the results for school-based candidates on Monday, revealing that only 38.32% of candidates earned credits in at least five subjects including English and Maths, according to Leadership News.

Out of the 1.9 million students who sat for the exam, only 754,545 met that critical benchmark for admission into tertiary institutions.

The council’s Head of Nigeria Office, Amos Dangut, said the failure rate was a sharp drop from last year’s 72.12% success rate in the same category.

Girls slightly edged out boys this year, with 53.99% of those who passed being female, compared to 46.01% male.

Dangut added that the exams were both digital and written, and were serialized to curb cheating, but some results were withheld due to malpractice.

Students affected by withheld results still have a chance to challenge the decision in court.

He confirmed 1,517,517 candidates had their results fully processed, while over 450,000 are still pending.

Candidates can check their results at www.waecdirect.org and get their digital certificate within 48 hours of access.

States owing WAEC won’t see their students’ results until outstanding payments are made.

Observers blame the dismal scores partly on poor logistics during the May exams, when candidates were kept late into the night at some centers.

“This year’s results are worse than those recorded during the COVID-19 lockdown,” a concerned examiner noted.

In contrast, 2023 saw nearly 80% of candidates pass English and Maths, and 2020 had 65.24%, both far better than this year’s outcome.
