Anthony Taylor has been confirmed as the referee to officiate the Premier League game between Arsenal and Liverpool on Sunday.

Liverpool leads the league with 21 points, with Arsenal sitting in third place with 17 points.

Taylor’s appointment comes after a weekend filled with refereeing controversies.

Taylor faced scrutiny for a perceived oversight during the Southampton vs Leicester match, with former footballer Alan Shearer labeling one of his decisions as a “really poor decision.”

Meanwhile, Chris Kavanagh found himself in the spotlight, having to overturn a vital call during Manchester City’s narrow victory over Wolves.

The discussions around these calls bring to light the intricacies of officiating in high-stakes matches.

Wolves boss Gary O’Neil raised important points about potential subconscious bias, questioning whether referees may deliberately favor the league’s larger clubs during crucial moments.

He emphasized that referees are fundamentally honest and doing their best, but acknowledged the human element that inevitably comes into play, stating, “if I had to upset someone in the street and there’s a big guy and a little guy, I’m upsetting the little one.”

Following the controversy, Kavanagh has been demoted to fourth official for Aston Villa’s match against Bournemouth and as VAR for Crystal Palace’s game against Tottenham.

As the Premier League weekend approaches, all eyes will be on Anthony Taylor.
