According to a report by Vanguard newspaper, former governors of Kano and Kaduna states, Abdullahi Umaru Ganduje and Nasir El-Rufai, respectively, may not be included in President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet.
The report suggests that Tinubu prefers technocrats over ex-governors or leaders of his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).
A source close to the president stated that he is “trying to avoid these APC leaders” and is looking to appoint technocrats instead.
The former APC governors, particularly those from northern regions, are reportedly pushing to be ministers, but Tinubu is trying to distance himself from them.
The source also mentioned that Rabiu Kwakwanso, the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), is being considered for a ministerial position in Kano over Ganduje.
He said: “There is a little crisis in the northern APC; they are becoming a liability to Tinubu.
“Most of the former governors want to be ministers because they feel they contributed to Tinubu’s electoral victory.
‘’Some of these leaders collected mobilisation from Asiwaju but they now want to become ministers.
“As a result of that, they now want to become a distraction to the president by insisting that they should be appointed as ministers and also appointing people to the boards of Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs.
“For now, Tinubu is trying to avoid these former northern governors; he is trying to distance himself from them.”
Tinubu is expected to send his list of ministers to the National Assembly within 60 days of his inauguration.
