Today marks the 59th birthday of Prince Edward, the youngest brother of King Charles III, who has been granted the title ‘Duke of Edinburgh’ by his brother.
This is a title previously held by Edward’s father, Prince Philip, and upon his death will be returned to the Crown.
As for Edward’s wife Sophie, currently ‘Countess of Wessex’ shall from today onwards become known as the ‘Duchess of Edinburgh’.
In addition, their son James (Viscount Severn) shall take up his father’s previous title and become known as ‘Earl of Wessex’.
Along with several other titles associated with marriage, Prince Edward also holds another Scottish title which is ‘Earl of Forfar’ which he will continue to use but in conjunction with his new more senior titled Duke of Edinburgh.
