A group of 24 retired military officers from Kano State has officially joined the Kwankwasiyya Movement, pledging full support ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

According to report, the officers, who ended 35 years of service in January 2025, visited Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to affirm their allegiance to the movement’s ideology.

The delegation, led by Kabiru Haruna, Executive Secretary of the Kano State Scholarship Board, described their alignment with the movement as a deliberate and meaningful step, aimed at strengthening civic engagement and democratic growth.

Receiving them, Kwankwaso commended their patriotism and experience, saying:

“These men have served our country with integrity and distinction. Now, they are bringing that same spirit to serve democracy and the people through Kwankwasiyya.”

The former Kano State governor described the move as a boost to the vision for a more inclusive and people-oriented Nigeria.

While this development is seen as a morale lift for the Kwankwasiyya base, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has been experiencing internal tension due to recent defections, particularly from members elected during the 2023 general election.

With over one million votes at stake in Kano, political observers suggest that both the NNPP and the All Progressives Congress (APC) are bracing for a tough contest in the state. APC’s National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, recently expressed confidence that the party would reclaim Kano in 2027, following high-profile defections from NNPP to APC.

Responding to ongoing rumours about Kwankwaso leaving NNPP for APC, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, reaffirmed the former presidential candidate’s commitment to NNPP. He clarified that Kwankwaso had no plans to join the ruling party or align with the federal government.
