Ruben Amorim did not hold back in his criticism of Bruno Fernandes after his red card contributed to Manchester United‘s 2-0 defeat to Wolves on Boxing Day.
The loss was United’s third consecutive defeat in all competitions, with the team struggling to recover after Fernandes’ second yellow card for a foul on Nelson Semedo early in the second half.
The match had been closely contested, but the sending-off shifted the balance in favor of Wolves.
Matheus Cunha gave Wolves the lead with a corner that sailed past Andre Onana into the net.
Despite making attacking substitutions to find an equalizer, United’s efforts were undone when Hwang Hee-chan sealed the win with a counter-attacking goal in the 98th minute.
The red card was Fernandes’ third dismissal in just 27 appearances this season, with his lack of discipline proving costly for his team.
Amorim, reflecting on the defeat, acknowledged that the red card was a turning point, stating, “Of course, when you lose, when we don’t win, it’s a step back. It was really hard with the sending off.”
“The goal was similar against Tottenham. Then, we tried. Even with one less guy we tried to and I think we were near something but then Wolves scored the second one.
“Then, in the end, we tried everything and the transition was 2-0. For us, let’s continue.
When asked about Fernandes’ red card, Amorim offered his thoughts, saying, “I think he cannot go to the ball. He’s trying to reach it, while some players aren’t even looking at it, but I don’t want to focus on that.”
“I think the good thing is we were near the goal, even with 10 men. That is a good thing, but we lost.”
He further added: “It’s so tough to win games in this league with 11 men. With 10 men, it’s more difficult. We have to focus on that.”
