The political drama around the removal of former Lagos Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, is still causing waves. Key figures from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos met with President Bola Tinubu in Abuja to try and resolve the ongoing crisis in the Lagos State Assembly.
On January 13, 2025, 32 out of 40 lawmakers voted to remove Obasa, accusing him of financial mismanagement and misconduct.
His deputy, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, was quickly sworn in as the new Speaker, but this move sparked strong reactions from different factions within the party.
The situation has divided the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC). While some wanted to move the Speakership to Lagos West for political balance, lawmakers from that region refused, backing Meranda instead.
Obasa still has strong support from some of Tinubu’s allies, with reports suggesting that the President himself is pushing for a resolution, even having met with key figures like Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Despite attempts to unseat Meranda, she held on to her position after Monday’s meeting. However, the battle isn’t over.
Several GAC members, including Senator Anthony Adefuye, believe Obasa’s removal was illegal and align with Tinubu’s alleged view that it was a political move.
Tinubu reportedly suggested that Meranda step down, allowing for Obasa’s reinstatement and the election of a new Speaker.
Some members of the GAC, including Tajudeen Olusi, resisted this, arguing that Tinubu had endorsed the current leadership.
Olusi also pushed Lagos West lawmakers to nominate new candidates for Speaker, but some in the GAC had already put forward names for Tinubu’s approval.
As tensions rise, Governor Sanwo-Olu, who isn’t on good terms with Obasa, might be subtly opposing his return, even though it seems to go against Tinubu’s wishes.
With no resolution reached, the issue has now been handed over to Abuja for a final decision.
