A 22-year-old woman from Connecticut was left with serious injuries after a shark attack while snorkeling in Turks and Caicos.
The attack occurred at the Bone Yard dive site in Princess Alexandra National Park, a marine-protected area of the islands.
The woman was taken to Cheshire Hall Medical Centre for treatment, and the incident is currently under investigation by the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force.
While such incidents are rare in the area, authorities are reminding swimmers, snorkelers, divers, and boat operators to exercise caution on the water.
Turks and Caicos is a group of islands in the Atlantic Ocean, southeast of the Bahamas, that are part of the British Overseas Territories.
