The Nigerian government is considering seeking the return of Simon Ekpa after a Finnish court sentenced him to six years in prison for terrorism-related crimes – www.naijnaira.com reports.
According to report, the Päijät-Häme District Court found Ekpa guilty of multiple charges, including terrorism offences, aggravated tax fraud, incitement, and breaches of the Lawyers Act.
The 40-year-old, a Nigerian-born Finnish citizen, was ordered to remain in custody immediately after the judgment.
Court documents revealed that Ekpa used social media to push separatist agendas, fueling disputes within the Biafra movement to gain influence.
He was also accused of organizing armed groups labeled as terrorist outfits and supplying them with weapons and explosives.
Prosecutors argued that between 2021 and 2024, he repeatedly urged followers to engage in violent acts across southeastern Nigeria.
Despite his denial of all allegations, the court reached a unanimous guilty verdict after 12 trial sessions concluded in June 2025.
Minister of Information Mohammed Idris reacted by saying, “The Nigerian government will assess the situation and take decisions in the best interest of the country.”
Attorney-General Lateef Fagbemi added that the ruling showed Finland’s cooperation and confirmed that Abuja may later submit a repatriation request.
