South African rapper and hip hop star, Kiernan ‘AKA’ Forbes, was tragically shot dead in a drive-by shooting outside the Wish Restaurant on Florida Road in Durban, South Africa, Friday night.
According to reports, his bodyguard was also wounded while another unidentified person died at the scene.
AKA’s family confirmed his death in a statement Saturday morning.
It is understood that AKA had been standing outside the restaurant where he was due to perform for his birthday celebrations when gunshots broke out from two unknown cars just before 10 pm.
Many of his close friends and colleagues have taken to social media to express shock and sadness at losing the popular performer so suddenly.
Speaking to IOL, stunned patrons at a nearby restaurant said they had seen the incident occur.
A spokesperson for ALS Paramedics confirmed that two people had died in the incident one of which was a famous rapper; this was later revealed to be AKA by numerous reports.
The rapper gained recognition after releasing his hit single “Victory Lap” from Altar Ego, his first studio album released back in 2010.
