Barton Town Football Club is in mourning following the tragic passing of their first team goalkeeper, James Hitchcock.
He allegedly suffered severe head injuries sustained during an assault at the city’s railway station last weekend.
Sadly, after fighting for his life in the hospital, Hitchcock passed away on Wednesday, leaving behind his wife, April, and their young son, Freddie.
An official club statement released on Thursday expressed the devastation felt throughout the team and its supporters.
The statement read, “Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.”
In a further display of respect, all games scheduled for the weekend have been postponed.
Barton Town’s chairman, Mark Gregory, shared his heartfelt sadness, stating, “James was a popular member of the club, and we are all devastated.”
Hitchcock’s manager, Anthony Bowsley, emphasized the deep personal connection, describing him as a “lovely kid” and a “genuine, all-round good guy.”
The British Transport Police arrested a suspect, 22-year-old Mckenzie Dicicco, from Stockton-on-Tees, and he has been charged with murder and affray.
