Nigerian international Victor Osimhen has faced criticism from his teammates following Napoli’s 3-1 loss against Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 match. The 25-year-old striker failed to make an impact for Napoli, earning criticism from both players and Italian newspapers.

In the first leg of their Champions League tie, Napoli managed to hold Barcelona to a 1-1 draw. However, they were unable to replicate that performance in Catalonia, resulting in a 3-1 loss after goals from Fermin Lopez, Joao Cancelo, and Roberto Lewandowski, nullifying Amir Rrahmani’s strike.

Osimhen was on the field for the entire duration of the match but failed to impress, appearing isolated from his Napoli teammates. He only managed one shot across the 90 minutes and won just one of his 10 attempted duels.

According to Italian newspaper Il Mattino, as reported by Calcio Napoli 1926, Napoli’s dressing room is unhappy with Osimhen’s display. The report suggests that the Nigerian striker is being criticized for being overpaid by the club and being pampered.

“Osimhen, overpaid and pampered by a club that has granted him everything this season, has worn the role of the superstar without repaying the generous benefits received off the pitch on the pitch, something that the locker room did not digest well,” as quoted by Calcio Napoli 1926.

The report further states that Osimhen’s behavior has disturbed the dressing room atmosphere, citing instances where he decided not to go to the bench with Genoa after his return from the African Cup of Nations.
