Terrence Hardiman, best known for his role as the terrifying head teacher in the CBBC series The Demon Headmaster, has passed away at the age of 86.

The London-born actor also appeared in popular TV shows such as Doctor Who, Prime Suspect, and The Crown, as well as narrating hundreds of audiobooks throughout his career.

However, it was his role in The Demon Headmaster that turned him into a household name, with the mid-1990s series based on the Gillian Cross book series.

In a 2019 interview with Radio Times, Terrence spoke about his enjoyment of playing a villainous character and his surprise at the show’s success, which was not only popular with children but also with parents and other viewers.

The late TV legend reportedly returned for a cameo appearance in the show’s 2019 reboot.
