Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South under the All Progressives Congress (APC), has expressed concerns about President Bola Tinubu’s political appointments.

He argues that these appointments violate the federal character principle enshrined in Nigeria’s Constitution.

Ndume believes that political appointments should reflect Nigeria’s national diversity to promote unity and fairness. He stated, “The Constitution is very clear when you examine it with the appointments made so far.”

He continued, “These are political appointments, and Section 143 clearly stipulates that political appointments should reflect the federal character.”

Ndume stressed that the Constitution requires inclusivity in political appointments, unlike specialized roles such as Chief of Army Staff or Inspector General of Police, where professional expertise is essential.

“You can’t appoint someone who is not a soldier as Chief of Army Staff or someone who is not a police officer as the IGP,” he explained.

“But for political appointments, the Constitution insists on fairness, and that’s being violated,” he added.

Ndume warned that ignoring the imbalance in these appointments could hurt President Tinubu’s administration.

“These things can boomerang at a certain time if they are not corrected,” Ndume cautioned.

He also rejected accusations that his criticism stemmed from personal interests.

“As a Nigerian, I have the right to voice this out,” he affirmed.

He clarified that as a lawmaker in the National Assembly, he must hold the government accountable.

Ndume further criticized some members of the administration for focusing on personal attacks instead of addressing his concerns.

“Tinubu’s attack dogs will attack me and not the message,” he remarked.

He concluded by reminding public office holders that they must answer to both Nigerians and God.

“At the end of it all, each one of us will stand before God and account for what we were responsible for,” he said.
