President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of several Kano State athletes involved in a tragic road accident while returning from the National Sports Festival held in Ogun State.
According to a statement by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Tinubu extended his condolences to the government and people of Kano State, as well as to the families affected by the accident.
“This is a devastating blow to the nation. It casts a shadow over the National Sports Festival, a celebration of unity, talent, and excellence,” Tinubu said.
The President paid tribute to the victims, noting their dedication and commitment to sport reflected the enduring Nigerian spirit. He emphasized that the best way to honour them is to improve safety measures across the country’s transportation systems and ensure similar tragedies are prevented.
In addition to reacting to the Kano athletes accident, Tinubu also addressed another pressing issue. He expressed concern over severe flooding in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State, which has resulted in deaths and widespread displacement.
On his official X handle, Tinubu extended condolences to affected families and the people of Niger State. He confirmed that the National Emergency Response Centre had been activated immediately and that he had been fully briefed by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on the scale of the Niger flooding disaster.
Search-and-rescue operations are underway, and relief materials are being deployed. Security agencies have also been directed to assist with emergency efforts, while NEMA continues coordination and support.
“Our government stands with all those impacted. We are committed to a coordinated and compassionate response that prioritises lives and helps restore dignity,” Tinubu assured.
He called on Nigerians to keep the people of Kano and Mokwa in their prayers.
