US President Donald Trump has called for an immediate “total ceasefire” between Israel and Iran, NaijNaira can report, just hours after fresh missile attacks.
According to Al Jazeera, the ceasefire announcement came shortly after Iran fired missiles at a US base in Qatar in response to American airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear sites.
Iran’s missiles were intercepted by Qatar, with sources suggesting Iran gave prior warnings about the attack.
Trump praised both nations, saying, “I would like to congratulate both Countries, Israel and Iran, on having the Stamina, Courage, and Intelligence to end what should be called, ‘THE 12 DAY WAR.'”
He added, “This is a War that could have gone on for years, and destroyed the entire Middle East, but it didn’t, and never will! God bless Israel, God bless Iran, God bless the Middle East, God bless the United States of America, and GOD BLESS THE WORLD!”
Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, responded, saying Iran would only stop attacks if Israel halts its “illegal aggression” by 4 a.m. local time on Tuesday.
Israel has not confirmed a ceasefire, and both sides were still firing missiles when Trump made his announcement.
Reports indicate the war started on June 13 after Israel struck Iran without warning, sparking global concern.
Several countries, including Nigeria, China, and Saudi Arabia, condemned the initial strikes, while the US, UK, and Germany called for peace but refused to denounce Israel.
Israel defended its actions as necessary to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons ahead of scheduled US-Iran nuclear talks.
Iran retaliated fiercely with drones and ballistic missiles, some successfully hitting Israeli targets.
Israel maintained air superiority, heavily bombarding Iranian cities and military installations.
Hundreds of Iranians and dozens of Israelis have died, with massive damage reported across both countries.
Amid growing pressure from Israel and its allies in Washington, Trump eventually approved direct US strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan.
“NOW IS THE TIME FOR PEACE!” Trump posted on Truth Social after announcing the attacks on Iran’s key nuclear facilities.
Although US airstrikes damaged Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, experts say much of Iran’s enriched uranium had already been relocated to secret sites.
The IAEA later confirmed the strikes inflicted serious damage on the targeted nuclear locations.
Trump’s ceasefire announcement signals a clear desire to stop the war from escalating and prevent further regional destruction.
