UEFA president, Aleksander Ceferin, has expressed his disapproval of the transfer policies of Saudi Arabian football clubs.
This comes after high-profile signings such as Karim Benzema and N’Golo Kante joined the Saudi Pro League (SPL) following Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to Al-Nassr earlier this year.
Ceferin believes that Saudi Arabia should focus on developing their own players and investing in academies and coaching, rather than spending large sums of money on aging players.
He cited the example of the Chinese Super League, which made similar mistakes in the past.
While the SPL has made some big-name signings, Ceferin believes that a long-term strategy of developing local talent is the key to success in football.
Cefrin said (via FootballTalkHQ): “Saudi transfer strategy is a mistake for Saudi football. They should invest that money in academies, bring coaches and develop their own players.
“Buying players at the end of their careers is not a system that develops football… Similar mistakes in China.”
