During a visit by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg to Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged NATO to invite Ukraine to join the alliance and provide more fighter jets and long-range weapons to aid in their battles with Russia in the east of the country.
Zelensky expressed frustration that the West has not given Ukraine guarantees or a timeframe for eventual membership, while Moscow sees Ukraine’s NATO membership bid as an existential threat.
Zelensky asked for NATO’s help in providing long-range rockets, modern fighter jets, and armored vehicles, but some member states have been reluctant to do so.
Stoltenberg declared that NATO stands with Ukraine and will ensure that they prevail against Russia, but did not hold out any immediate prospect of alliance membership.
The issue of membership will be discussed at the NATO summit in July.
The Russian attack on Bakhmut is being spearheaded by the Wagner mercenary group, and the Kremlin has shown no sign of backing down.
